It’s been a very long time since I was in college – so long, in fact, that if you were born on the day I started college, you’d likely be a college student now. So to say I was a bit apprehensive to even start this assignment is an understatement.
But, the intrepid reporter I am, once I stopped procrastinating, I dove head first in to the college bar scene. And, as it turns out, there are far more options for students to go out and unwind and have a few drinks than when I was in school.
So, here goes.
West Chester, in its own right, is a happening town. The addition of the university only increases its appeal for anyone looking to head out on the town for some fun. Students have an amazing variety of choices when it comes to nightlife. Here, we’ll focus on the kind that includes beer and other spirits.
Kildare’s Irish Pub
Kildare’s website says, “A good Irish pub is traditionally the cornerstone of the town. It is a place that can be a destination for multiple purposes or no reason at all.” This is what Kildare’s is. Stop by Kildare’s and have a drink, eat some great food and take in some entertainment. Kildare’s offers a variety of musicians and events scheduled throughout each month, along with loads of specials. And hey, I have an old college friend who has been known to perform here every so often, so stop by and see him some time.
Landmark Americana Tap & Grille
Landmark is home to the Underground Bar. College night is held every Thursday with $2 U Call Its and $2 Fireball shots. Friday and Saturday specials include $2 drinks and $3 shots. Doors open at 9 p.m. and students are encouraged to “dress to impress.”
With a long list of drink specials, you can stop by Ryan’s pretty much any day of the week and have a great time. And if you’re in the mood for some grub while you’re there, the menu features traditional pub fare, as well as some unique entrees.
Barnaby’s of West Chester
The simplicity of Barnaby’s is what makes it so attractive to some students. There’s no overly obnoxious hype, no crazy gimmicks, just great food and perfectly poured drinks. What more could you ask for in a college bar?
Ram’s Head Bar & Grill
College night is held every Thursday and features $1.50 Rolling Rock and $2.50 mixed drinks. Also on Thursday there’s $3 select drafts, $5 house wines and half price appetizers (bar only) 5-7 p.m., $7 Yuengling Lager pitchers and $3 mixed drinks 10-12, beer pong starts at 10 p.m. Prizes are given for first and second place. College night is held in the Rathskeller.
Jitters Sports Bar
Jitters describes itself as your quintessential local bar with a mix of patrons from all aspects of the West Chester community. They are open 365 days a year with specials every day of the week.
Mas Mexicali Cantina
Más Mexicali Cantina serves fresh Mexican food in a “Rock and Roll environment.” Mas has a first floor cantina, the Velvet Lounge when you want to chill out and, weather permitting, Mas on the Roof, perfect for hanging outside with your Corona and tacos.
Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant
I would be remiss if I didn’t include what I think of as a go-to place when you want a handcrafted beer to pair with a unique meal. You can expect a special every day of the week. And if you stop by, don’t forget your growler.
As noted, since I don’t go out much (read: I could be your mother), I had to really work my internet prowess. So if I missed a really hot spot, don’t get mad, let me know. I’m only human after all. Send them to firstname.lastname@example.org. And finally, if you have to drive to any of these places, remember to designate a driver, or call Uber. That’s the mom in me.
