BETHLEHEM >> The Flaming Lips kicked up an acid-trip tableau at Musikfest on Friday night, complete with anthropomorphic mushrooms and rainbows dancing around the stage, a storm of confetti and oversized balloons raining down upon the audience, and a rapidly glittering light display so brilliant it might have induced seizures.

The band opened with “The Abandoned Hospital Ship” from 1995’s Clouds Taste Metallic, encored with “Do You Realize??” off of the classic Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and touched upon a decades-long career of crowd favorites in between.

It was an intense, resplendent, sonically delightful performance — and it gave a proper opening to Musikfest’s 10-day event at SteelStacks.
