The following is only a sampling of events in the region:
Rising Sun Inn: A Guarding of the Liberty Bell Encampment, with Ottendorff’s Corps and other Revolutionary continental reenactors, is set for June 30-July 1 to celebrate the legend of the bell’s secret transport from Philadelphia to Allentown in 1777 during the British occupation of Philadelphia. Festivities start at 10 a.m. June 30 and include musket and rifle demonstrations, blacksmithing, cannon demonstrations and educational speakers. Admission is free.
Holiday festivities on July 4 include a buffalo hot dog eating contest, a chili cook-off and a quoits tournament. It gets underway at noon. The inn is at 898 Allentown Road, Franconia Township. Call (215) 721-6350 or visit www.risingsuninn.net.
Fonthill Museum: Gather on the Fonthill grounds at East Court Street and Route 313, Doylestown, from noon to 4 p.m. July 4 for the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. The event features a bike parade contest, old-fashioned games, patriotic music, crafts, food and other activities. Fonthill will also be open for special self-guided castle tours beginning at 1 p.m. The Wine Cellar and the Crypt will be among the rooms that are open. The separate admission fee to tour the castle is $3, $2 for seniors 65+ and $1 for youths 5-17. Visitors are welcome to picnic on the grounds or purchase food. Adventure Aquarium: The Independence Day Splash, an evening of fin-tastic patriotic family fun, happens from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 4 at the aquarium, 1 Riverside Drive, Camden, N.J. Enjoy themed activities including a magician, DJ dance party and a view of one of the fireworks display over the Delaware River. Tickets are $22, $11 for children 2-12.
Stenton: From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 4, Stenton will host an Old-Fashioned July 4th Celebration at 4601 N. 18th St., Philadelphia. Visitors are encouraged to spend the day celebrating the Fourth of July in Historic Germantown, beginning at Stenton, where guests are invited to enjoy hot dogs and make-your-own ice cream. Activities will include creating an American flag-themed fan, mingling with Benjamin Franklin, colonial games and music by Run of the Mill String Band. Ambler Kiwanis carnival: The annual carnival runs 5 to 10 p.m. June 30-July 4 at Wissahickon High School, Houston and Dager roads, Lower Gwynedd. Ride wristbands are available every night except Fireworks Night July 3. The fireworks show is set for around 9 p.m. See more details at www.facebook.com/AmblerKiwanis.
