Phoenixville >> The smell of ribs will be floating through downtown Phoenixville on Saturday afternoon as at least 16 contenders vie for the top prize in Pepperoncini Sotto’s second annual Pork Rib Cook-Off. The event will be held from 12 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot adjacent to Pepperoncini Sotto at the corner of Bridge and Main streets.
“It’s going to be good and it’s going to be big, this year,” said Pepperoncini’s “Pizza” Dave Griffith, who came up with the idea last year, as something different in the downtown to get summer underway.
“I came up with the idea, and the more I talked about it, the more people thought it would be something good to do,” he added.
Griffith said there will be more participants this year — restaurants and community members — who will compete for cash prizes for first, second and third place.
“We have five judges from the community to award the prizes, but we’ll also have a popular vote this year,” Griffith added. “Everyone will be given a chance to vote for their favorite.
For the admission price of $20, attendees can sample ribs from each of the contestants. There will also be a beer garden, which opens at 11 a.m., a DJ from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and live music from 12 to 5 p.m.
Among the participants are: the French Quarter Bistro, Molly Maguires, The Fenix, The Moose Lodge, Joe’s American Pub, Tague Lumber, University of Penn, P.J. Ryan’s Pub, The Black Powder Tavern, Great American Pub, Bistro on Bridge, Uncle B’s BBQ, Puglio’s Players, Pepperoncini Phoenixville and Pepperoncini Conshohocken.
“Plus, we expect there will be a couple of additional participants,” Griffith added.
Griffith said that again this year; proceeds from the event will benefit The Clinic of Phoenixville, 143 Church Street, which provides healthcare to the uninsured.
