If you’re looking for something special to do with your valentine, consider visiting the eight wineries of the Berks County Wine Trail on Saturday Feb. 14 and Sunday Feb. 15 (Noon to 5 p.m. both days) for the wine trail’s annual event: “Chocolate & Wine Pairing Event Weekend.” This event will be the ultimate in sampling wines of the region, paired with a sweet smorgasboard of chocolates and homemade confections at each of the stops along the wine trail in Berks County. This self-guided tour takes you through the landscapes of the wintertime countryside paired with the charm of each of the wineries’ and vineyards’ themselves. Don’t have a Valentine?
No reservations or tickets required; this event’s featured wine pairings are free, but please note that two or three of the wineries do charge a nominal fee for wine tastings from their complete wine list. These tasting fees are refundable with the simple purchase of a bottle of wine.
A complete menu of wines & chocolates to be featured will be posted on the trail’s “events” page, but here’s a sneak peek:
Blair Vineyards (Kutztown): Earl Grey Chocolate Truffles will be paired with the winery’s 2009 Pinot Noir.
Kog Hill Winery (Morgantown): The winery will be pairing their Merlot red wine with samples of a double chocolate fudge cake; and they will also be pairing their Dry Riesling white wine with white chocolate covered grapes.
Bashore & Stoudt Country Winery (Shartlesville): The annual bath in chocolate! Two chocolate fountains will be splashing with different chocolates for you to dip samples of fresh fruits, cookies, and pretzels. The winery will feature their popular Strawberry Wine produced from local strawberries.
Pinnacle Ridge Winery (Kutztown): The winery will be exploring the savory side of chocolate during this event weekend, serving samples of a Mexican Mole with chicken. Mole is a ancient style sauce made with peppers and many other ingredients (including chocolate) and is often served with poultry. Paired with the mole, will be the wineries two power reds, 2013 Merlot and 2013 Quaff.
Manatawny Creek Winery (Douglassville): The winemaker pairs a homemade Syrah chocolate cake made with a Syrah wine glaze and of course, paired with a Syrah Sangria.
Long Trout Winery (Auburn): The trail’s own hippie winery will feature samples of fabulous chocolate cherry cookie truffles and feta cheese with walnut/date cigars paired with their signature Berried in Chocolate red wine.
Clover Hill Winery (Robesonia): Vignoles white wine will be paired with a White Chocolate Almond Bark from Premise Maid Candies. NOTE: This event and free tasting will only take place at this winery’s Berks County location. Please note, this event is not taking place at Clover Hill’s Lehigh Valley location.
Calvaresi Winery (Bernville) Chocolate covered dried cherries will be paired with the winery’s, Concord red wine; or ultimate malted milk balls paired with Calvaresi’s bold Port wine.
Groups larger than eight people it would be very helpful if you contacted the wineries you plan on visiting to let them know about your plans to visit. Need suggestions of where to stay to make it a truly romantic weekend? Please email the wine trail: berks_county_wine_trail@yahoo.com
