STORY WRITTEN BY MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER/For 21st Century Media
When Ed Kowalczyk split acrimoniously from Live, the alternative rock pride of York, PA, the future was uncertain to say the least. Leaving a world renowned act he fronted that released seven acclaimed studio albums – selling 20 million – played countless live shows and built a remarkably passionate fan base will do that sometimes.
Having released two well-received albums since his departure in 2009, Kowalczyk has returned to the music that made him famous in the first place. He recently announced the “Throwing Copper Unplugged – 20th Anniversary Tour,” which will celebrate the two decade mark for Live’s most popular release in a stripped back, intimate and disarming setting.
That jaunt kicks off in February, with a stop at the Sellersville Theater on April 26, but before then, the singer is going to close out 2014 is spectacular fashion, with a full band performance Saturday as the headliner for the Running of the Santas Mega Festival at the Electric Factory.
Dubbed “the biggest Santa party on the planet,” the indoor/outdoor event will also feature local acts like Love Seed Mama Jump, LeCompt and Split Decision, but chances are most will be in attendance to see Kowalczyk. His catalog is chock full with some of alternative rock’s most iconic hits, including “Lightning Crashes”, “I Alone”, “Selling the Drama,” “Turn My Head” and “Overcome” and “Heaven,”along with solo singles like “Grace” and “Seven.”
The Running of the Santas is an annual bar tour that started with just 40 participants at Pitcher’s Pub in Manayunk and has turned into a national phenomenon. The goal is to raise money for local charities while getting a lot of Santas together for one big party. In Philadelphia, well over 5,000 Santas are expected at the event which has a short, three-block “run.”
