There aren’t too many things for free these days but on Saturday, Sept. 13, residents of Trappe and the surrounding area are in for a real treat.
With live music, children’s activities and other events creating a chock-full schedule, the 11th Annual Trappe Community Day, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Water Works Park located at 230 West First Ave. in Trappe, promises to be fun for all ages, or so this year’s slogan states: Free activities all day for the young and those who are young at heart.
“So many people look forward to this every year and it is really uplifting for the community,” said Trappe Mayor Connie Peck. “There are not a lot of freebies but this is truly one of them.”
Peck said there will be three different music performances that include Tony Maddonni & The Music Men, Rock and Roll After School Super Group and The Left Edge classic rock group.
In addition, there will be a bungee jump, rock climbing, petting zoo, pony rides, bounce inflatable, sumo wrestling suits and train rides.
When asked if all these activities are free, Peck said, “Yes, they are absolutely free.”
She said, “Children can come enjoy all the activities and parents can too knowing that they aren’t having to shell out a bunch of money.”
The only thing not included is food but there will be plenty of vendors, most of which are local, selling food. The local fire company will also be there selling hotdogs and hamburgers.
Peck made sure to add there is also pavilion at the park for those who want to pack their own lunch.
The event is slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the opening ceremony, which includes a community welcome, the national anthem, tribute to military and first responders and a dedication of the day’s festivities to the late Kathleen McDowell. Tony Maddonni & The Music Men will play at 10:15 a.m. and the activities will commence at 10:30 a.m.
The Hilarious Magic of Sam Sandler show will take the stage at noon. According to www.SamSandler.com, “[He’s] an accomplished illusionist, comedian, magician and inspirational and motivational speaker, [who] presents an unforgettable and hilarious show for the whole family. … [He] has won multiple first place awards for his style of magic, from the Society of American Magicians.”
The Rock and Roll After School Supergroup, which is comprised of musicians age 11 – 17 from the surrounding area, will perform at 1:30 followed by The Left Edge classic rock band at 2:30.
Eric Stimmler, vocalist and keyboardist for The Left Edge, said, “We play a little bit of everything—from Sinatra to Sabbath. Everyone will enjoy the music whether they are 90 years old or four years old and dancing to the Shrek tunes.”
“We will also be doing a Blue Brothers skit and a quick Elvis skit,” he said. “We love these types of shows and have as much fun performing as the crowd enjoys listening, or so we’ve been told by those who have seen us play. We’re really looking forward to it.”
Peck says a lot of work went into planning the event, which started in January, and it required a lot of coordination.
She said it’s important to give back to the community and people really enjoy it.”
“Last year more than 3,000 people came through the park, and I’ve been told it’s one of the best events like this. We are very proud of that.”
“Trappe is quite a historical town and we want people to know about it,” Peck said. “We want people to see what we are all about and enjoy our hospitality.”
“Everyone come out and enjoy the day,” she said.
A rain date for the event is scheduled for Sept. 20.
