They may look like three ordinary teenagers, but once they open their mouths to sing, you know there’s absolutely nothing ordinary about them. They are Il Volo, a world renowned Italian opera group featuring Piero Barone, Ignazio Borschetto and Gianluca Gioble. Now on a U.S. tour, they will be appearing at the Mann on June 26 with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
This young powerhouse trio, who performs and records in English, Spanish and Italian, just won a Latin Billboard Award for Latin Pop Album: Artist of the Year, Duo or Group, and are coming off a top-selling album last year titled “Buon Natale.”
“We met and got together just five years ago in 2009,” says Gioble, who was just 14 at the time. “Piero and Ignazio were both just 15, and so we all traveled with our parents to do shows when we were that young. They were always looking out for us. But now we are grown up and able to travel on our own.”
The trio first captured the heart of American audiences when they did a guest shot on American Idol singing “O Sole Mio.” And they haven’t stopped since.
Introduced by family members to opera while growing up in Italy, Gioble admits that his family is the most important thing in his life “It was my grandpa who is my inspiration. He introduced me to this kind of music. But I love all kinds of music too.”
And although being away from friends and family for long stretches at a time, Gioble says when he is home he often can’t wait to go out on another tour. “For me, it’s like fun work because singing is my passion. I am doing what I love to do.”
Today, the three singers have become great friends. “It’s almost like we are brothers. We have no ego problems. I don’t think I am a great singer, but together we are great,” Gioble says. He adds that Philadelphia fans can look forward to a great show. “We have changed some things around so I think audiences will enjoy our little surprises.”
For this performer, his greatest joy is meeting the fans. He says, “When I look at the people and they are happy when they listen to our singing, that’s just beautiful and it makes me happy too. I’m especially happy when I’m singing my favorite song, Smile by Charlie Chaplin.”
Ten years from now, Gioble says he looks forward to much of the same. “This is a wonderful job I have. I am living a dream. How many people are lucky enough to say that So if I can just continue on doing what I love doing, I will be one of the happiest people alive.”
