There soon will be a new venue in Doylestown to enjoy the best show tunes in monthly cabaret performances, all at the initiative of Michael Moeller Productions.
About a month ago, Moeller put on “The Lullaby of Broadway” at the Central Bucks Senior Center benefiting local children with autism as treated at the Peace Valley Holistic Center.
In order to put on the performance, renovations were completed at the senior center to reflect the style of the big city venues. It made it the perfect venue for regularly occurring performances.
Over this past holiday season, Moeller was an understudy in “Elf” at Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre, which gave him the opportunity to take classes.
Moeller chose a cabaret class where he met his co-stars for the inaugural “New Friends and Old Songs,” at the new Cabaret Room at Central Bucks Senior Center.
As a cabaret singer, Heidi Hayes has traveled the world from Singapore to New York City to Florida and back to Philadelphia. In this area, she appeared at The Red Room, Society Hill Playhouse and the Gershman Y. Accompanist and performer Eric Thompson is a Philadelphia based vocal and theatre educator who has been seen and heard in numerous productions throughout the region.
Of course, Moeller who plans to keep the Cabaret Room stocked with monthly performances has his share of credits — from directing “Mame” starring Linda Dano and Anna Stuart to appearing regionally at numerous theaters including the Walnut Street Theatre, Riverfront Dinner Theatre, Town & Country Players and the Bucks County Playhouse.
While Hayes will perform songs that focus on the “dream” theme with some of The Carpenters’ songs, Moeller said he and Thompson will simply perform numbers they enjoy.
“The Cabaret series will have a more casual feel,” Moeller said. “We’ll be sitting around the piano talking with the audience — more like a piano bar.”
Guests are welcome to bring alcoholic beverages and the new venue comfortably seats 170 people at cabaret style tables. There will also be snacks and non-alcoholic drinks for sale before the show.
Among the other songs to be performed include, Olivia Newton John’s “I Honestly Love you,” Peter Allen’s “Everything Old is New Again” and Little Shop of Horrors “Suddenly Seymour.”
“We’re having fun with it — picking songs we enjoy performing and that will evoke emotions and memories from the audience for being old time favorites,” Moeller said. “I’ve been performing since I was a kid and I just love being around talented people like Hayes and Thompson. The audience should enjoy the way we mesh together.”
IF YOU GO: “New Friends and Old Songs” will be held Friday, April 4 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. at The Cabaret Room at the Central Bucks Senior Center, 700 N. Shady Retreat Road in Doylestown.
